Orwell, Vermont

Orwell is a town in Addison County, of the "Mid Vermont" region and is home to Mount Independence, the largest fortification constructed by the American colonial forces. The town was named for Francis Vernon (1715-83) the first Baron Orwell.

Some notable people from the area include: Louis Winslow Austin, a physicist; Oliver Bascom (1815-1869), a politician; John Catlin, acting governor of the Wisconsin Territory (1848–1849); Marsena E. Cutts, a politician; and William P. Kellogg, a politician.

Soldiers atop the Mount 9/5/15 - 9/6/15
Step back to 1776 and 1777 as reenactors take over the Mount, demonstrating Revolutionary War camp life, military tactics, colonial crafts, firing artillery, cooking, and clothing manufacture. There will be an interactive “Baldwin Trail walkabout” on Saturday, children’s activities, the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence, and music by the Seth Warner Mount Independence Fife & Drum Corps. Suitable for all ages.
