Where: Flynn Center for the Performing Arts City: Burlington, VT
Description: Witnesses to his astonishing live performances echo the lavish praise heaped on Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer. Voted the 2010 Musician of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, an honor previously given to Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter, and Dave Holland, Iyer has released 16 albums as a leader, most recently, for the ACT label, Accelerando, Tirtha, Solo and the multiple-award-winning Historicity, which features the Vijay Iyer Trio and was named #1 Jazz Album of the Year in the New York Times, the DownBeat International Critics Poll and countless others. Tonight’s performance highlights his solo work, which is firmly grounded in groove and pulse, but also is rhythmically intricate and emotionally compelling. Across his diverse output, Iyer’s many points of reference include jazz piano titans such as Monk, Ellington and Tyner; the classical sonorities of composers such as Reich, Ligeti and Bartok; the low-end sonics of rock, soul, funk, hip-hop, dub and electronica; the intricate polyphonies of African drumming; and the vital, hypnotic music of Iyer’s Indian heritage.
