The 2005 Komen Vermont Race for the Cure Nancy Brinker started the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1982 in memory of her sister, Susan, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. The foundation is a national non-profit organization with Komen Race for the Cure events in 112 cities across the country. Through early funding of basic research, Komen has laid the groundwork for some of today's most promising breast cancer treatments. Each year, the Foundation grants and fellowships in basic and clinical research, and grants in the areas of breast cancer education, treatment and screening projects for the medically underserved. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over 583 grants from its Grant Fund to recipients who were selected through a peer review process recognized by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He's a rare athlete with many medals from all sorts of sports competitions over the years, sponsored by the U.S. Cerebral Palsy Association. But, John broke his collarbone in a 2001 accident where he fell off a racing rowcycle and now is totally depended on nursing care. His friends established Stephen's Trust, which has allowed John to swim regularly at the Norwalk, CT - YMCA. However, despite the Y's generosity with a free membership, the cost of a trained aide and transportation amounts to more than $450 a month... and money is running out.
