Vermont Trivia
Sinzibukwud?
|
Sinzibukwud is the Algonquin term for maple syrup - it means "drawn from wood".
It was Native Americans who developed the process of maple syrup production and
taught it to the Europeans. They would cut a "V" in the trunk of a maple tree and
insert a reed or curved piece of bark into the opening. Under the opening, they
would set a clay pot to catch the dripping sap. The sap was then concentrated
either by leaving it out overnight and tossing out the frozen water, or by placing
hot stones into the sap to evaporate some of the water. The result was used in
cooking and sometimes as a sweet drink. When European settlers introduced iron
and copper pots, it allowed the sap to be heated longer, removing more of the water
and producing what we know today as maple syrup.
Visit Vermont during our maple sugaring season, usually late February in the south
to mid-April in the north (depending on the weather) to watch the centuries-old
tradition of boiling maple sap to produce sweet Vermont Maple Syrup. A one-of-a-kind
experience to be cherished always!
