Your Guide to Skiing & Snowboarding in Vermont
Skiing and Snowboarding have always been a favorite winter pastime in Vermont. With the abundance of winter ski areas throughout the state, it's no wonder Vermont is the premiere skiing destination on the East Coast.
Ski mountains of Vermont include Stowe Mountain Resort, Killington Mountain Resort, Pico Mountain, Stratton Mountain Resort,
Sugarbush Resort, Mad River Glen, Burke Mountain,
Jay Peak, Ascutney Mountain Resort, Magic Mountain, Okemo Mountain Resort, Mount Snow, Smugglers' Notch Resort,
Bromley, and Bolton Valley.
Many of the country's best skiers & snowboarders come from Vermont. A few notable Alpine Skiing Olympic Medalists include William "Billy" Kidd, born in Burlington, Vermont; Andrea Lawrence, born in Rutland County, Vermont; and Barbara Cochran, born in Richmond, Vermont.
Notable Snowboarding Olympic Medalists include Danny Kass and Shaun White, both of whom spent a lot of their time at Okemo Mountain and Bear Mountain in Ludlow, Vermont. Ross Powers is an American world champion halfpipe snowboarder from Peru, Vermont; Hannah Teter is from Belmont, Vermont; Lindsey Jacobellis is from Stratton, Vermont; and Kelly Clark is from Burlington, Vermont.
Vermont is also home to Jake Burton and Burton Snowboards, the world's first snowboard factory, currently located in Burlington, Vermont. Snowboarding was once considered an "underground sport" and ski resorts did not allow snowboarders on their mountains. In 1982, Suicide Six Resort in Pomfret, Vermont became the first resort to allow snowboarding and today about 95% of all ski resorts allow snowboarding. Shannon Dunn-Downing, the first American woman to win a medal in snowboarding, is also noted for working on women's products with Burton Snowboards.
If you're a skier or snowboarder (or you're thinking of learning), Vermont is the place to be. Vermont ski resorts have something to offer everyone from the expert skier to the beginner. Find out the latest snow conditions with our Ski & Snow Report.
