For years, civil unions were the highest form of a relationship that Vermont recognized between same sex couples. But not any more. Today, Vermont is one of the states leading the way when it comes to gay marriages and the rights these relationships bring.

Vermont welcomes couples of all make-ups to visit and celebrate their love for one another. Our landscape fashions a powerful backdrop with vibrant colors and magnificent natural features that are both romantic and heartwarming. There are many romantic resort settings, activities and events that make any where in a Vermont the perfect place for a destination wedding.

The new marriage equality law, passed September 1, 2009, discontinues the need for the separate status of "Civil Unions" in Vermont. Civil Unions prior to September 1, 2009 will continue to be recognized, and couples wishing to be married will need to go thru the new marriage process.

NOTE: The Vermont legislature approved a marriage equality act (PDF) permitting same-sex marriage in Vermont which took effect September 1, 2009.

     "With the passage of Act 91, An act relating to civil unions, the Vermont State Legislature provided eligible same-sex couples the opportunity to obtain the same benefits and protections afforded by Vermont law to married opposite-sex couples.

     This Act also provides eligible blood-relatives and relatives related by adoption the opportunity to establish a reciprocal beneficiaries relationship so they may receive certain benefits and protections, and be subject to certain responsibilities, that are granted to spouses in a marriage or a civil union."
