OVERVIEW

The Old Constitution House State Historic Site, also known as the "Birthplace of Vermont," is the location where delegates from the newly formed Republic of Vermont met to draft a constitution. The Vermont constitution became the first in America to prohibit slavery, allow men to vote without requiring property ownership, and authorize a public school system. The Old Constitution House is a stop on the Vermont African American Heritage Trail.
