Skiers have long known the joys of Vermont Winter in the "Northeast Kingdom" region of Vermont. The name refers to the corner of the state against the Canadian Border and the upper Connecticut River. Often known as "God's Country" because the area is full of pristine untouched landscape, the Northeast Kingdom is an outdoorsman's paradise. Ski Mountains in the area include Burke Mountain, located about 30 minutes north of St Johnsbury and Jay Peak, located about 30 minutes west of Newport and only 20 minutes from the Canadian border. Both offer state-of-the-art snowmaking during the ski season. Follow SnoCountry's current Vermont ski reports right here on Vermont.com, then click on a resort for more details. It's Vermont Winter. Snowboarding, as we know it today, began when a young man named Jake Burton Carpenter started manufacturing fiberglass snowboards out of his garage in 1979 in Southern Vermont. Today, participants who ski or snowboard co-exist together on both, Burke Mountain and Jay Peak, observing a national Skiers and Snowboarders Responsibility Code. Snowboarding lessons are offered at both resorts, with professional snowboard instructors, and both resorts have terrain parks, where riders - even relative beginners - can learn and practice tricks.
