Private schools and independent schools are not administered by local, state, or national government. They retain the right to select their student body and are funded in whole or in part by charging their students tuition rather than with public (state) funds.
Being free of outside control and funding, many are able to set their own standards and mission, and to serve particular families and children. Some work with average to above-average children, while others work with the learning-disabled or those with unsatisfactory previous school experiences. Many offer boarding as well as day programs.
At present there are a number of independent schools that reflect the variety of needs that exist in the state. The Vermont State Board of Education views these schools as an important element of the state's educational system.
